Acne Rule #3: Avoid Food That Contains Iodine

Reduce your intake of foods that are naturally high in iodine, including eggs (especially the yolks), seaweed, sushi rolls, kelp, and milk and dairy products (which you should be avoiding anyway). If you’re a fan of Japanese food, opt for sashimi instead of sushi rolls. (FYI: Not all sushi rolls contain seaweed. Sushi rolls without seaweed are OK to eat.)

Reduce your salt intake. Be thankful you weren’t born in the early 1900s. Just as vitamin D deficiency became a public health epidemic in the first part of the twentieth century (leading to the mass production of vitamin D-fortified milk), iodine deficiency -which can cause thyroid problems, goiter (swelling of the neck or larynx), and even mental retardation- became a growing health concern by the start of World War I. The solution? Mass production of iodized salt beginning in 1924.

These days, iodine deficiency isn’t really a significant health concern in the U.S., since prepared, processed, and packaged foods all contain plenty of iodine. (Developing nations, on the order hand, including India, Pakistan, Haiti, and Sudan, still report iodine deficiency in alarming numbers.) Some evidence suggests that Americans might even be at risk of consuming too much iodine, probably because we tend to eat too much salt in general.

The majority of salt, including table salt and sea salt, is iodized. Use it sparingly or opt instead for kosher salt, which is not iodized. Remember, you shouldn’t cut iodine from your diet completely, or you’ll risk some serious health complications, but reducing your salt intake can do wonders for your skin and overall health.

Acne Rule #2: Avoid Full-Fat Milk Dairy Products

  • Skip out on full-fat milk and dairy products, including instant breakfast drinks, sherbet, yogurt, cheese, cottage cheese, cream cheese, and ice cream. Instead, shop for unsweetened soy milk or almond milk and soy cheeses, and swap out butter for nondairy, trans-fat-free margarine spread. If you can’t make that kind of commitment, then at the very least choose nonfat, skim, and organic milk and dairy products, which have fewer cow hormones (though they will still increase androgens in your body, stimulating your oil glands).
  • Beware of “hidden” dairy products. Milk and dairy can sometimes show up where you least expect them. Processed luncheon meats, for example, are a common source of “surprise” dairy products.  So are granola bars. Be sure to read the labels to avoid milk solids. Stay away from the ingredients whey and casein. Anything labeled parve (a kosher term) is fine.
  • Get your calcium elsewhere. Everyone knows that milk and dairy products are an excellent source of calcium, so if you’re cutting dairy from your diet, you’ll want to account for that. Calcium supplements might be a good option for you.

6 Quick Beauty Fixes for All Your Summer Skin Issues

Trust us: It’s way too hot to wear pants. Here’s how to get your legs (and arms, and chest) ready for the season’s skin-baring outfits. By Jenny Bailly O, The Oprah Magazine | From the July 2011 issue of O, The Oprah Magazine

.

A Spotless Décolletage

A retinoid cream—either prescription, like Retin-A, or over-the-counter (look for retinol in the ingredient list)—will lighten discoloration and soften rough patches caused by sun damage. Two to four treatments with a KTP laser or intense pulsed light (IPL) can more dramatically minimize both the brown spots and redness caused by UV exposure.  A fractional nonablative laser, like the Fractional CO2 AcuPulse, greatly improves not just the color but also the texture of the skin. You’ll probably need at least two treatments.
A rich shaving cream and a four-blade razor are all you need to get smooth legs for at least a day or two. Laser treatments can drastically reduce the amount of hair on your legs (or bikini line or underarms) for good. After three monthly sessions, most patients have 50 to 80 percent less hair in the treated area, says Tina Alster, MD, clinical professor of dermatology at Georgetown University Medical Center.

Silky Legs

A rich shaving cream and a four-blade razor are all you need to get smooth legs for at least a day or two. Laser treatments can drastically reduce the amount of hair on your legs (or bikini line or underarms) for good. After three monthly sessions, most patients have 50 to 80 percent less hair in the treated area, says Tina Alster, MD, clinical professor of dermatology at Georgetown University Medical Center.

Veinless Legs

Self-tanner works like magic to make leg veins less noticeable for natural color and nonstreaky finish. Sclerotherapy—in which a solution is injected into individual veins—will get rid of those blue squiggles permanently. Until recently, most doctors used saline, which could sting, but many have now switched to the painless Asclera, made with a detergent solution called polidocanol (approved by the FDA last year). Two or three treatments are usually necessary, and the veins look worse before they get better in about a month.

Scar-Free Skin

While a stretch mark or scar is still red (which can last from months to years), three or four treatments with a Vbeam pulsed-dye laser will improve its appearance considerably, says Arielle Kauvar, MD, clinical professor of dermatology at NYU Medical Center. Once the mark has turned white, the best treatment option is a nonablative fractional  CO2 laser like AcuPulse by Lumenis. Four or five sessions can improve the mark’s color and texture from 50 to 90 percent. For an immediate fix, use a heavy, full-coverage concealer; match it to the darker skin around the mark

A Slimmer Silhouette

Even sylphlike models slip into shapewear to minimize bulges around the hips and waist try it when temperatures are high. Looking for a longer-term solution? A new device, Zeltiq’s CoolSculpting, uses intense cold to destroy fat cells. CoolSculpting was approved by the FDA last fall for body contouring, and doctors are excited about the results. “It’s fantastic for getting rid of pockets of localized fat, like love handles or muffin top,” says Jeffrey Dover, MD, associate clinical professor of dermatology at Yale School of Medicine. The procedure is virtually painless; some patients experience aching in the treated area for a few days afterward, but most have no side effects. You’ll see the maximum results after four months; more than one treatment may be necessary.

Firm Knees

A long skirt can still allow for a sexy flash of your knees. If yours look more droopy than you’d like, tightening your quadriceps with squats might help. Are you convinced you want to tighten the skin around your knees? Then you’ll have to visit a dermatologist. Some have seen noticeable results from Ulthera, a new device that heats the lower layers of the skin with ultrasound to spur collagen growth. One treatment should do, but it hurts—most patients take a prescription pain medication, like Percocet, and an antianxiety pill, like Valium. TITAN or Thermage, which uses radiofrequency energy to grow new collagen, can also tighten loose skin on the knees and is less painful than Ulthera. Both techniques are most effective in the early stages of sagging.

Laser Hair Removal for Unwanted Hair- Quickly Eliminate the Bother of Unwanted Hair

The technology of laser hair removal has seen big improvements in recent years, and more people are making it a part of their beauty regime. While earlier lasers were so limited that many people could not use them, the lasers used today are more versatile and can work on a wider variety of skin and hair types.

To see how laser hair removal works, you must understand that dark colors absorb more light than lighter colors do.  A dark color is really an area that is absorbing almost all the light that strikes it, so only a small amount is reflected to the viewer’s eyes. That’s what makes the color seem “dark” to us. This is true with all forms of light, including laser light.

When the laser beam is directed on an area where hair is growing, the pigment in the hair absorbs energy from it. The hair follicles are temporarily damaged, which stops them from growing. While they will eventually repair themselves, the treatment usually lasts for several months.

Four different types of laser have been used for hair removal, and each has its individual characteristics.

Ruby lasers are the oldest kind and are still in use by the EpiTouch or Epilaser hair removal system. They can’t be used on dark-skinned areas because the pigment in the skin absorbs so much of the laser’s energy that it is no longer effective against the hair follicles. It has a small area of coverage and works best on light or fine hair.

Alexandrite lasers are used by the Candela GentleLase Plus hair removal system. This kind of laser has a larger coverage area than the ruby laser, so treatments are faster. It will work on a wider range of skin tones, though it still has trouble with very dark skin and works best where the hair is darker than the surrounding skin. At present, alexandrite lasers are probably the most widely-used form of laser in the hair removal field.

Diode lasers are used in the Coherent Light Sheer hair removal system. Since it uses a longer wavelength than either alexandrite or ruby lasers, it has more penetrating power and is therefore more effective on darker skin tones. Unfortunately, this makes it less effective in the removal of fine or light-colored hair.

1064 ND Yag lasers with long pulsed energy are used in the Cutera Coolglide system. It is the most effective wavelength of light for on darker skin tones, and is also used with a shorter pulse duration to remove tattoos and pigmented lesions. It has a large coverage area resulting in fast treatment time. For lighter and fine hair the prowave 770 is more effective.

There is no evidence of serious harm from laser hair removal treatments, but since the hair follicles are underneath the skin, the laser beam must penetrate below the surface and will touch the nerves, resulting in a brief sensation. Some patients liken it to a gentle pinch, others compare it to the pop of a hot rubber band. Luckily, this sensation passes very quickly and you are left with smooth, stubble-free skin.

Laser hair removal provides quick and effective relief to stop hair bumps and shaving irritation and give you a break from bothersome shaving or other hair removal techniques. Common areas of treatment include the face, underarms, bikini, abdomen, arms, and legs.

Acne Rule #1: Choose Low Glycemic Index Foods

As If you needed another reason to keep your blood sugar in check, research also shows that in addition to wiping out acne, eating a low glycemic diet can help you fit into your skinny jeans: In another study by those researchers at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, people with acne who were placed on a low glycemic diet had clearing of the skin, lower levels of androgens in their blood, and an average weight loss of 3 pounds a week (over 12 weeks) when compared with those who are foods that were high on the glycemic index. What’s more, the research implies that these changes may happened acutely, meaning the results are evident immediately, often after just one meal.

Studies also show that if you start the day with a low glycemic breakfast, you’ll have a less dramatic blood sugar spike (and related insulin boost) at lunch, which suggests that the effects of healthy (or unhealthy) meals build up throughout the day. Start your day off right, and you’ll have stable blood sugar in the evening. But eat a croissant or a bagel (or skip breakfast altogether), and your blood sugar and insulin will be out of whack all day long.

Step 1 in avoiding breakouts is to steer clear of sugar, corn syrup, and foods that are high on the glycemic index, including the following:

  • Refined grains, such as white toast, English muffins, pastries, croissants, muffins, bagels, pasta, and white rice. Instead, choose 100 percent whole grain products. You can look for the whole grain stamp or read the food label; (i.e., wheat, oat, rye). If it does not say the word whole, it isn’t a good choice. And beware of products marked multigrain. They may be made with more than one grain, but that doesn’t mean they’re made with whole grains.
  • Ketchup, barbecue sauce, and pasta sauces, which are often made with corn syrup. Look for sugar-free or low sugar versions.
  • Sugary sodas and sport drinks. In lieu of sugar you can sweeten beverages (and cereals) with a calorie-free sugar substitute. Or try weaning yourself off sugar gradually. For example, use just one packet of sugar in your coffee instead of two.
  • Processed luncheon meats, which are often a source of hidden starches and sugars. Instead, choose fresh roasted turkey, fresh roast beef or rotisserie and grilled chicken.

For those days you’re really craving carbs, consider pairing them with protein. Studies show that eating protein and fat alongside carbohydrates (such as adding chicken to your pasta, for example) can reduce the severity of spikes in your blood sugar. Just remember that the most important factor in keeping your blood sugar balanced is still the composition of the carbohydrate. In other words, it’s good to add that chicken, but it’s much more important that your pasta be made of whole wheat.

What Is A Good Body Mass Index (BMI) and How Do You Measure Up?

What exactly is a body mass index (BMI), and how do you measure up? Body mass index is an overall idea of what you should weigh based on your height. The BMI is a general guideline to calculate your body fat based on how your weight correlates to your height. Doctors use the body mass index as an average to determine if you might be at risk for health related problems. As with any general rule there are always exceptions, and it would be best to discuss your concerns with your doctor and consult with them to find out if you fall in the average setting. This index is not used for children, but mainly for adults.

Okay, now you know what BMI is, but how do you determine if your body mass index is in the approximate healthy range? You must know your exact height and weight, as the formula is your weight divided by the square of your height. Using a body mass index calculator would speed up your figuring.

What Is A Good Body Mass Index?

A healthy BMI is relatively expected to be between 18.5 and 25. Any figure under the lowest would be considered unhealthy in an underweight sense, and anything over the higher figure would be generally considered overweight. In general, the medical world uses this as a guesstimate of who would be likely to have more health problems. The conclusions are based on a healthy weight related to height.

So, what if you discover that you have an unhealthy BMI – does that automatically mean you are unhealthy? If so, what risks could you be looking at? As previously stated, remember that this is a general, not specific calculation, and does not cover the exceptions. There are, however, some health related risks that are tied to high or low BMI. Heart conditions are an issue with heavier body weights, as it puts more strain on the heart.

Also, a link was observed in some individuals in various dermatology studies between obesity and the tendency to develop psoriasis. It seems that when patients with psoriasis underwent treatment and additionally reduced the calorie intake, it enhanced the effect of treatment. Another skin condition, Keratosis pilaris, is also linked associated with those having a higher BMI. There are additional skin conditions that can appear because of high BMI, all related to being obese.

There are some treatments available for some of the affects that might appear alongside a high body mass index. A number of symptoms can be alleviated with treatments from your dermatologist. Wrinkles can be combated by the latest state of the art procedures in cosmetic medicine. Symptoms from skin conditions like psoriasis and keratosis pilaris can improve with treatments of prescription strength creams and lotions. Talk to your dermatologist, as they can discuss the treatments that would best suit your needs.

Rosacea Laser Treatment- Stop the Redness, Bumps and Irritation

Do you suffer from red blotchy skin on your face?

If you do, chances are it is a skin condition known as Rosacea. Over 14 million Americans develop this skin condition between the ages of 30-60 years old. This common adult face rash has very little to do with your general health, even the healthiest of people may develop it. There is a higher incidence of Rosacea in women than men but both can develop this skin condition.

What does Rosacea look like?

Rosacea has three stages.

  • Stage one: The face gets flushed or has blotches of reddened areas. Generally this is limited to the central parts of the face on the forehead, nose, chin and apples of the cheeks. With time, small cobweb-like blood vessels will appear as superficial veins become dilated making the redness more noticeable.
  • Stage two: In this phase the redness begins to spread over a larger portion of the face. You may notice slight swelling and pimples or pustules develop that are also located in the mid facial areas.
  • Stage three: The third stage is characterized by the development of a bulbous nose known as rhinophyma. On average, most people do not progress to stage three. W. C. Fields, the famous comedian, had stage three rosacea.

How to stop the redness, bumps and irritation of Rosacea?

Rosacea is most often treated with topical and oral medications which can stop the pimples and breakouts, but the redness and flushing of the face that is the most common symptom is best treaded with lasers. Laser treatments will reduce the redness and diminish the visibility of veins. This treatment has also been found very helpful in reducing the acne-like pimples associated with this skin condition.

Most patients will see a significant improvement in their skin after just one laser treatment however it is necessary to have several sessions for full treatment and maximum clearing. Rosacea is not 100% curable, but you can slow the progression and eliminate the symptoms. If you take precautions to avoid over-exposure to the sun after your treatment many people will go years before the symptoms of flushed face and visible veins reappear.

Does laser therapy for Rosacea hurt?

You might find that you feel a bit of discomfort during the treatment but it is not really painful. It is comparable to the quick snap of an elastic band on the skin. Most women are not overly uncomfortable with this procedure. Men tend to have a lower pain threshold and may find it a bit more painful. It is rare to have a patient complain of unbearable pain or ask for the skin to be numbed with a topical cream during the laser treatment for the facial veins and redness associated with rosacea.

Will you need to take time off work for recovery from laser treatment?

There is no real downtime following a laser treatment. The skin may be a bit red or swollen but this generally disappears within a few hours. A few patients experience purpura or purple bruising that will go away within a few days. You can return to work as soon as you feel comfortable. Most patients leave the office after their session and go on with their daily routines.

If you are one of the 14 million Americans suffering from Rosacea you now know there is help available to you. To get help with stopping this problem so you can live without a red bumpy face, schedule a dermatology consultation to have your skin evaluated and set up a laser treatment schedule to give you a clear complexion again. You will be glad that you did.
