Laser Hair Removal
In
the past, men and women plagued by unwanted body and
facial hair were forced to employ waxing or electrolysis
in addition to shaving. Whatever the modality chosen,
the patient was often faced with long, expensive, and
sometimes painful treatments.
Since the advent of the CoolGlide Laser system,
however, those methods have become relics of the past.
Cleared by the FDA for permanent hair removal, the
CoolGlide Laser, made by Cutera Medical, formerly
Altus Medical, can remove hair from all parts of the
body including the face, legs, arms, underarms, and
back. They can also treat sensitive areas like the chest
and bikini line.
The CoolGlide Laser system is simply the best
laser hair removal system on the market for all
skin tones from light to
dark, including tanned patients. Its unique design
with a longer wavelength and an innovative cooling system
allows extremely effective, safe, and permanent results.
The system generates a beam in the critical 1064 nm
range at a high enough power to vaporize the carbon
particles in the fine and coarse hair on all skin types.
Our XEO laser is, in fact, capable of generating
14,000 watts of peak power, more than any other laser
available for office use.
Hair grows in three cycles. At any one time about one-third
of the hair is in the growth phase, one-third in the
regression phase, and one-third in the resting phase.
Since laser is effective only during the growth phase,
three treatments spaced four to six weeks apart are
usually necessary to disable all of the hair follicles
in given area.
The procedure is simple. The area to be treated is
prepared by shaving. Although no pain medication or
local anesthesia is typically required, we ice for approximately
ten minutes prior to the treatment.
The CoolGlide handpiece is then applied to the
skin in a gliding fashion, cooling and soothing as it
goes along. Areas that would take hours with electrolysis
are addressed in minutes.
PCA phase 11 hydrocortisone cream is applied following
the treatment. The skin may appear slightly red for
a very short time but this usually resolves rapidly
and there is no restriction in activity. We recommend
the use of a sunscreen on any treated areas exposed
to the sun.
